May Day - The International Labor Day - The History - When is May Day

May Day or International Labor Day
The origin of May Day is indissolubly bound up with the struggle for the shorter workday – a demand of major political significance for the working class. May 1st, International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in most countries. This struggle is manifest almost from the beginning of the factory system in the United States. Although the demand for higher wages appears to be the most prevalent cause for the early strikes in this country, the question of shorter hours and the right to organize were always kept in the foreground when workers formulated their demands against the bosses and the government. As exploitation was becoming intensified and workers were feeling more and more the strain of inhumanly long working hours, the demand for an appreciable reduction of hours became more pronounced.

The History of The Workers Day
The struggle for the eight-hour day began in the 1860s. In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the United States and Canada, organized in 1881 (and changing its name in 1886 to American Federation of Labor) passed a resolution which asserted that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's work from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labor organizations throughout this district that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution". The following year the Federation repeated the declaration that an eight-hour system was to go into effect on May 1, 1886. With workers being forced to work ten, twelve, and fourteen hours a day, support for the eight-hour movement grew rapidly. In the months prior to May 1, 1886, thousands of workers, organized and unorganized, members of the organization Knights of Labor and of the federation, were drawn into the struggle. Chicago was the main center of the agitation for a shorter day. The anarchists were in the forefront of the Central Labor Union of Chicago, which consisted of 22 unions in 1886, among them the seven largest in the city.

During the Railroad strikes of 1877, the workers had been violently attacked by the police and the United States Army. A similar tactic of state terrorism was prepared by the bureaucracy to fight the eight-hour movement. The police and National Guard were increased in size and received new and powerful weapons financed by local business leaders. Chicago's Commercial Club purchased a $2000 machine gun for the Illinois National Guard to be used against strikers. Nevertheless, by May 1st, the movement had already won gains for many Chicago workers. But on May 3, 1886, police fired into a crowd of strikers at the McCormick Harvester Machine Company, killing at least one striker, seriously wounding five or six others, and injuring an undetermined number. Anarchists called for a mass meeting the next day in Hypermarket Square to protest the brutality.

After having the way of this struggle, May 1, 1990 at last May Day became internationalized by the United States. And now the day marks the 1886 Hypermarket Affair in Chicago, where police shot and killed several demonstrators who were fighting for the eight-hour workday. Over the next several years, people across the globe began demonstrating on May 1, and in many countries the day became an official holiday.

Mother Day, What is & When is Mother Day, Mother's Day Around the World, History of Mother day, Exact date of Mothers Day, Significance of Mother Day.

M” is for the million things she gave me,
O” means only that she’s growing old,
T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
H” is for her heart of purest gold;
E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me.
–Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

What is & When is Mother Day
A celebration of mothers and motherhood, Mother’s Day is observed in many parts of the world. Mother's Day is a day set aside for each family to honor its mother, and is observed in different ways all over the world. This festival is celebrated across 48 countries on various days.
In the U.S., Mother's Day is a day for families to thank their mother for all of the hard work she does for them. She is encouraged to relax, and might be served breakfast in bed, given gifts (like flowers or a spa treatment), or taken out to a fancy dinner —in 2008, 8% of the U.S.'s jewelry revenue came from Mother's Day alone! But we don't need to buy a fancy gift to let your mother know how much you love her — perhaps you could write a letter or draw a picture of something special she has done for you, and let her know how much you appreciate that!

                                                                                    Mother's Day Around the World

While many countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May, others have their own traditions! Norway, Israel, and Greece all celebrate in February, while much of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Iraq, celebrates on the vernal Equinox in March. In China, it is a day to help poor mothers, especially those in rural areas, and the tradition of "Mothering Day" in Ireland and the United Kingdom first came about in the 16th century as the one day a year servants were released from their duties to spend time with their families.

History of Mother day
Historians believe that the ancient Greeks and Romans first celebrated a form of the holiday, which back then was a festival for their respective mother goddesses, but Mother's Day as we know it first started during the Civil War.
The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.
Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honour of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome.
Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday.
But the most present history is, In 1858, a young wife named Ann Jarvis began a tradition she called "Mother's Work Days" as a way to force her Union and Confederate neighbors to work together, if only for one day. After Ann died in 1905 her daughter, Anna, continued the holiday in her own way — in 1907, she passed out 500 white carnations at her church (one flower for every mother in the congregation!), and the idea of a holiday celebrating mothers spread throughout the United States.
In 1914, Congress decided that the second Sunday in May would officially be declared Mother's Day and, on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made a speech observing the first national Mother's Day, in honor of those mothers who had lost sons at war.

Need to know the exact date of Mothers Day this year? Here's a chart that shows what day Mother's Day is celebrated from 2010 - 2016.
In the US, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. In the UK, mothers are honored the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Significance of Mother Day:
Without moms where would we be as a society? It is safe to say that our society would be significantly smaller, colder and more ill-mannered. It is our mom that teaches us how to nurture and how to love. It is through her guidance that we as individuals learn how to be empathetic and sympathetic to those around us. How many times have you been in a public place and seen a child get hurt and 3 or 4 moms run to the aid of that child. Obviously they are all not the child’s mother, but there is a need there… a willingness to make sure those around them are alright.
I look at the moms that I know, and I think they are all amazing in their own rights. I know that there are many days that if I was in their position I would’ve stayed in bed and covered my head with pillows to block out the existence of all around me… but a mom won’t do that. Even if a mom is sick she is up taking care of those she loves. Moms are self sacrificing… it is in their nature. I don’t think it is a trait that females are born with though… I think it is a trait that they acquire when they have a baby. Moms will go without just to make sure that their children… their husbands… their families are taken care of and have everything they need.
Moms also have the innate ability to make everything alright. You can have the worst day of your life, when you were little you’d come home from school sad over a fight that you had with your best friend at school. Mom would listen to you, wipe away your tears… and tell you how much she loved you and tell you she knew that tomorrow you and your friend would be okay… she’d give you a cookie and everything was okay. When you got older all it took was a phone call to mom, she would listen to you and her words would take all of the pain away. Moms never stop… they never get a day off… they are never really rewarded or credited for all they do.

Now to remember all that and think a little from your heart then say isn’t it any significant of Mother Day? Yes, realize that and Let her know how much she means to you. While in the end moms believe the greatest reward for all they have done is seeing their children turn into happy successful adults… they could all use a little acknowledgment a love from us along the way.
